In today's überpluralist culture, there has never been greater tension between nationalism and globalism. Economic power centers are shifting east, American cultural hegemony is passé, and recent college graduates can't wait to accept their first job overseas. Yet, much of the presidential campaign rhetoric - even from the liberal Democrat - seems intent on inciting nationalist pride and competitive aggression. While Obama and McCain talk about keeping America on top, many Americans are sounding more like Socrates: I'm not a citizen of Silicon Valley or New York, I'm a citizen of the world! This week on Big Think, we explore the next American experience, that is, living in a nation defined less by borders and more by technology, achievement, innovation, and yes, immigration. This 4th of July, join a conversation about what it really means to be a red-blooded American in this ever-shifting global landscape.
