I'm naturally resistant to poison ivy! I'm not unique, 15-30% of people have no allergic response, although heavy exposure can change things. Which is cool, but I'm starting to wonder if I could use this convenient genetic mutation to grease my wallet. I need to come up with an idea that could actually lead to money. I'm under the federally defined poverty line; I have been under the federally defined for many years, which ironically means that I'm living in poverty in a first world nation.
The leaves secrete an oil called urushiol, which causes an allergic reaction, which means if immune, I either have something that "cancels it out" or the confirmation of my proteins are not receptive to the antigens. Anyways, I have to study what in my body is preventing the immune response. After I figure that out, I feel like it would be really easy to synthesize the respective chemical, x, in order to produce a drug that could prevent the response in people who are (heavily) allergic. Most likely, it would looks something like this:
1. take the drug for a week or two before (potential) exposure- build up the concentration in the body
2. perhaps take the drug for a week after?
I just need to figure out how to execute a complex series of chemical reactions, taking something out of my body, and making it bond to someone else's...
