Subject born in the wrong decade?
Posted Date: November 26, 2007 - Monday - 03:12
I think I might have been born in the wrong decade. As wormy as this sounds, all I think about all day is space travel, and discovering life in other areas of the universe. Honestly, I have observed cycles of life on earth, and I'm over it! I feel like I've "seen it all before." Perhaps the only thing that interests me regarding life on earth is which specific species will survive the human impact on the environment- my theory is things like pigeons, rats, sharks, some plants (basically, species people call "hardy" throughout the world) will continue to last despite pollution, genetic pollution, epidemics, etc.
I seriously think as a first step, scientists could quickly and efficiently create a false atmosphere on mars (by genetically engeneering a lichen which is a symbiosis btwn an algae and fungus) to survive in 1. an extremophile environment and 2. an environment with WAY less radiant engery (basically, mimick the extremophile bacteria's lifecyle at the bottom of the ocean either on a benthic oceanic plane -OR- inside thermal vents and then in the thermal vents case figure out how to produce the opposite i.e. a cold instead of hot environment). Wait, was that just one sentence? I think I should stop.
In my opinion, the lichen, if able to survive on mar's surface through genetic manipulation, would cause the following effect- the algae would start to spit out oxygen, and the lichen provides a "home" and nitrogen to keep the algae alive- basically, this mimicks the creation of the atmosphere on earth after it was first created.
Basically, I'm saying that I always have dreams about post-apocalyptic worlds, and my dreams ususally do come true, they all have so far. I know I'm just babbling. I mean, space travel only costs $10 million at this point, because the x-prize privatized it! Sometimes, privatization can be a good thing, I plan on working for a biotech company in 4-ish years and not the government, why would I want to work for such an inefficient organism? I can't think of a good reason either.
And after the fact, there's no way the concentration of oxygen on mars could ever be the same as the one on earth? I just feel like an atmosphere with more Oxygen in it would allow matierial science to synthesize us simple, light, fashionable space suits instead of heavy metal ones. Who would want to wear shit like that? Lance Bass?
quoting wikipedia:
Proponents of privatization believe that private market actors can more efficiently deliver many goods or service than government due to free market competition. In general, over time this will lead to lower prices, improved quality, more choices, less corruption, less red tape, and quicker delivery. Many proponents do not argue that everything should be privatized; the existence of problems such as market failures and natural monopolies may limit this. However, a small minority thinks that everything can be privatized, including the state itself.

(bio)augmentation @ osiris dot com
I have had the extreme pleasures to see bioaugmentation irl- my significant other West has had an infusion of stem cells through a research project called The Osiris Project that is currently treating Crohn's patients in San Francisco.
I love being able to observe this moment in history first hand- it's very exciting and inspiring!
There is a chance he received a placebo, but I don't think that is the case because I've seen his tissue rapidly heal over the course of a few days- basically months of work in an afternoon. He has "the flush" of someone who has received an infusion of stem cells.
Basically, stem cells could cure any disease, and they could also make people live forever! Well, in case you died in a global pandemic or from being hit by a car. Forever Young.
Did I fail mention that it MIGHT be wise to invest in this technology?
Living forever in my human body doesn't interest me. I want to have a robot body, connect my brain to the internet, becum a virus and, put my face on yr desktop! lol
Negative Side affects: moodiness, mood swings, and he smells like creamed corn so much, omg it comes out of his mouth (it's from a combo of hormones + more). These leave after 1-3 days.
I love research! It's so fun to see what improvements science can make on our lives and the world. It's interesting to observe this.
